The Changing Landscape of Social Media: A Shift Towards Decentralization and Privacy

In recent years, social media platforms that once dominated the digital landscape are facing challenges, leading to a decline in their popularity and influence.

For instance, Twitter has been on a decline in recent years, and the new leadership of Elon Musk on the platform appear to expedite this downward trajectory. Furthermore, TikTok, despite its rising popularity, is confronted with the potential of being prohibited in various nations. Regarding Instagram, it has shifted its focus from being a social networking site to becoming an entertainment platform, prioritizing media consumption and commentary over communication.

Another tendency of social networks, including messengers, to copy the functionality of other networks once again proves that they are ready to do anything to attract users and keep them on their platform. For example, Telegram and Signal, introduce stories where the feature seems odd within the UX, inappropriate, and rejected by the majority of users - and loosing focus on what kept them unique in the first place.

So why is it happening? Factors such as economic pressure, focus on monetization efforts rather than improving user experience, provisioning of AI data to corporations, and increasing censorship of content have prompted significant transformations.

As a result, social networks are evolving into entertainment-centric businesses, emphasizing revenue generation over user engagement. Amidst these changes, alternative communication channels are emerging, with decentralized social networks and privacy-centric platforms gaining traction.

The Impact of AI and Economic Pressures

The advent of AI revolutionized the digital space, with companies shifting their priorities from relentless growth to sustainable profitability. Investors now demand tangible returns from social networks, leading to aggressive monetization efforts. Additionally, the emergence of large language models that gather information from the public internet has led social media platforms to restrict access through subscription barriers. Many platforms are limiting access to data and introducing paywalls, altering their focus from user experience to profitability. But meanwhile, they are also aiming to sell data to AI firms instead of offering it openly. Twitter and Reddit, for instance, have already implemented restrictions and faced criticism from their communities.

Twitter has already enforced the limitations, while Reddit has witnessed moderator protests following the rollout of a premium API, resulting in the transformation of most subreddits into private communities.

The Transition to Entertainment-Centric Platforms

Social networks are transitioning into entertainment platforms, with media consumption taking precedence over communication. The focus is now on captivating audiences through entertainment content, rather than solely facilitating connections between users. This shift has resulted in a decline in traditional social media usage.

As social networks evolve into multifaceted entertainment platforms, losing their exclusiveness, users are immersing themselves in a wide array of engaging content, from short-form videos and live-streamed performances to interactive storytelling and augmented reality experiences. This transformation has prompted creators, influencers, and even traditional media outlets to tailor their content to fit this new entertainment-centric landscape, redefining how we perceive and engage with digital platforms. Consequently, users now find themselves not only connecting with friends and acquaintances but also being swept up in a captivating realm of entertainment that blurs the lines between virtual interaction and content consumption. It has a reflection on the type of content you can read in social networks and as a result, the quality of this content is doubtful. And we can see new communication barriers as people have to pay more attention to their entertaining content instead of providing their audiences with valuable content and communicating directly through it.

Social apps are all starting to look the same

The world’s most widely used social networks are starting to look a little ... similar.

As companies like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Snapchat have developed over time, they have begun adopting each other's ideas in an attempt to create an all-in-one user experience.

Even messaging platforms are embracing this trend, aiming to transform private and group communication spaces into entertainment hubs taking ideas from social giants. They are also introducing paid subscriptions to fully leverage these functionalities, as we can see in Telegram.

These platforms rely on advertising for revenue, meaning that the more users spend time using their apps, the more profit these companies generate. But now people also can pay to use the same features all social networks have and to have more abilities inside the network.

Imitating features that have gained popularity among rivals is one strategy to increase user engagement, which explains the recent proliferation of such practices.

However, the consequence of this approach has been a somewhat lackluster race to mediocrity. Each application is forfeiting its distinct identity in favor of incorporating features that are readily available in multiple competitors. In the past, users selected a social platform based on originality, content presentation, and distinctive attributes. Yet, the current landscape makes it progressively challenging to opt for something fairly unique. Presently, the differentiation between social networks primarily lies in their design and the pricing of access to specific features, along with the removal of limitations.

Censorship's Chokehold on Free Speech in the Social Media Landscape

It is a well-known fact that numerous individuals have voiced grievances about being subjected to censorship and even bans across various social networks due to their viewpoints. The impact of censorship within the realm of social media poses constraints on the realm of free speech, dictating the boundaries of what can be expressed or posted. This control stems from the perception that certain content might be perceived as hazardous, granting specific companies the authority to filter out what they deem inappropriate. Consequently, individuals often find themselves unable to freely articulate their opinions, as certain viewpoints may be suppressed or concealed from public view. This serves as an indication that users' rights are restricted, obliging them to align with the predetermined agendas set by these social media platforms.

In conclusion, the encroachment of censorship on social media significantly curtails an individual's capacity for free speech. This limitation arises from the sensitivity of certain ideas, which could be construed as offensive, harmful, or compromising. The ultimate authority to determine the content subject to censorship rests with the social media corporations themselves. Consequently, this prevailing scenario propels users towards seeking alternative platforms, offering them the means to express their thoughts and opinions more freely to their followers.

Resurgence of Privacy-Centric Channels and Raise of Decentralized Social Networks

In response to the changing landscape, alternative communication channels are gaining prominence. Group chats, and messengers, even though they are also slowly turning into entertainment social hubs, and forums that seemed to be forgotten are experiencing a resurgence, reminiscent of a time when communication centered around personal networks. More users start seeking private places of communication with familiar individuals.

Also, we can see new players in the social networking field - web3 decentralized networks such as Mastodon, Solcial, Lens. These platforms are oriented on providing their users full freedom of speech without censorship, personal data security and confidentiality, and new ways of monetization. These platforms with improved technologies including encryption and other ways to protect you from the corp influence allow users to interact with friends and have their feeds where they can tell what they want without any restrictions and censorship. However, these applications are still in the process of refinement and have yet to reach their full potential.

The emergence of privacy-centric platforms and decentralized networks is promising, but they still face challenges. Onboarding new users is a tricky process for decentralized networks like Solcial, because most users are not ready to change traditional ways of online communication to web3 possibilities.

The reason is that people from web2 who are using traditional social networks do not have enough knowledge about blockchain and web3 technologies and as a result do not trust them. Also, the influence of traditional social networks and their addictive algorithms affect a larger number of users maximally keeping them in an infinite distance of the tape with repetitive content.

But it is still a matter of time as more and more people are coming for data privacy and lack of censorship being banned without explanation for sharing their thoughts with their followers. Also, newcomers who want to build online business has a big competition and it is hard for them to build something valuable to get profit from their content. Web3 platforms can give them more abilities to earn from the beginning.  The transition from web2 to web3 networks is gradually moving in the right direction. The more traditional social media outlets care about their own profits, the more people will begin to realize the importance of quality content and will look for more secure places to communicate where they can safely express their thoughts in their content and communicate freely with their friends and followers.

We can see that such platforms as WhatsApp and Signal are gaining popularity by prioritizing enhanced privacy measures. Discord is also emerging as a noteworthy alternative to Reddit, catering effectively to users' social needs. But these platforms can't guarantee you full confidentiality and freedom of speech.

The digital landscape of social media is undergoing significant changes, with prominent platforms shifting towards entertainment-centric models to prioritize profitability. This has led to a resurgence of privacy-centric channels and a growing interest in decentralized social networks. While challenges remain, the emergence of these alternative platforms indicates a shift towards a more private, interconnected, and secure future for social media.
